Medicine, the science of healing may have started during the pre-historic times as evidenced by records showing the ancient Greek and Babylonian medicine. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, laid the foundation of rationale medicine from which modern medicine of today was patterned.
Both the traditional and modern medicine operates under the same principle – to provide healing. However, differs in guiding principles and many theories brought about by the continuous research and evolution and development of technology. How do the two differ and alike?
Traditional medicine operates on the principle of applying a single or in combination of approaches to treat, diagnose, prevent illnesses and maintain well-being through health practices or approaches that utilize knowledge and beliefs using plants, animal, spirits, manual techniques such as massage and exercises. Modern medicine on the other hand, involves the utilization and application health science, biomedical research and modern medical technology in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. Also included are various procedures known as surgery which involves the manipulation of certain body structures and organs as a form of treatment of rehabilitation which are not common to traditional medicine.
